Aftertaste Symposium

Project Type: Temporary Installation and Reception

Design Partners: Sebastian Caiedo Cajiao, Khatera Dehzad, Lindsey Dieter, Adriana Feuerberg Colmenares, Marina Cunha, Julia Grunberg, Jia Hua, Amanda Kerschner, Shin Kim, Jacueline Leung, Naoko Oba, Laura Suppan and Elizabeth Wright.

Project Brief:

Ambiguity <n> uncertainty, inexactness, or multiplicity of meaning. This reception offers a rediscovery of familiar territory via the unfamiliar. Playing with spatial and experiential lenses, the senses are suffused with ambiguity and are led toward revelation.

β€œThe reception was bathed in monochrome diffuse light using low pressure sodium lamps that rendered vibrant food displays in subtle de-saturated tones. Existing columns provided the framework for bio-based Xorel fabric partitions in the foyer, allowing for the controlled diffusion of incandescent light. Custom food pedestals, cocktail tables and a wall mounted utensil display were constructed of recycled paper homasote panels.  All materials were donated, recycled or repurposed with an emphasis on environmental impact and sustainability.”

Permutations of Memory

Permutations of Memory

Brandon Pietras, Lindsey Dieter, Takako Taniguchi, 2015

IES Student Competition Entry

RGB LED Strip, Concrete, Pressed Board

What is the memory of a day? Many details of our memory of place - the remnant spark of experience - are lost in the haze of recollection. An especially overlooked constant is the transient sunlight washing the scenes of our past.

Just as an artist applies layers of paint to a stretched, blank canvas, the rising and setting sun paints the urban landscape of New York City. Nuanced shifts in the qualitative aspect of natural light act as a universal signal of time and space. This permanent vault acts as an inspiration bank for nostalgia, reflectance and new ideas.

This installation attempts to remind the viewer that what they look at is never as it seems. The concrete sidewalk you remember wandering upon has never been grey. Instead, we demonstrate that daylight paints it a myriad of colors that vary dramatically by season.

Taschen Headquarters

Location: 404 West 15th Street, NY New York

Project Type: Conceptual Electric Lighting Design

Design Partners: Ketryna Fayres, Yanxi Chen

Project Brief: German publishing powerhouse; Taschen, was  founded by Benedikt Taschen in 1980. Their fearless publications bring art, architecture and design books to the masses through color, stimulation and the over sized book.

The electric lighting concept for their headquarters is the demarcation of space through color. We connected adjacent spaces in rich and dynamic ways while still allowing the essential level of privacy needed in an office environment. Colored light defines public and private space while white light allows for optimum functionality.

Moments Had In Corridors

Project Type: Temporary Installation

Design Partners: Jackie Leung, Khatera Arch, Jia Hua

Project Brief: The speed with which we move through horizontal circulation spaces strips us of the subtle nuances present within a transitory state. This installation aims to slow human movement through a historic corridor, creating space and time for reflection and experience.
